Ideological Centers in Iran Call for Provocations in Azerbaijan

Recent decisions concerning uniform requirements and the principles of secularism in public schools in the Republic of Azerbaijan have been actively discussed in Iran in recent days, drawing sharp reactions from official and ideological media outlets.

The main discussions are taking place primarily on social media platforms linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and ideological centers based in Qom.

Media outlets and social media activists affiliated with these institutions have taken the decision out of context and circulated targeted content falsely claiming that a “hijab ban” has been introduced in the Republic of Azerbaijan. These propagandistic posts accuse the Azerbaijani state of pursuing policies that are hostile to Islam.

At a time when Iran is facing significant public resistance and discontent over its compulsory hijab law, pro-government media are using the issue as an opportunity to divert attention from domestic problems. By portraying Azerbaijan as a target, they are sending ideological messages to their domestic audiences about the importance of preserving Sharia-based rules.

Through accusations circulated across these media and social media networks, efforts are being made to artificially create the impression of religious confrontation and discontent within Azerbaijan. Calls based on Sharia principles are being promoted while the country’s secular model of governance is targeted.

Meanwhile, opposition figures living abroad, bloggers, and administrators of social media channels are being urged to become more active. They have reportedly been offered any necessary support to ensure broader coverage of the issue.

These platforms have also circulated statements by local clerics and repeated longstanding accusations by Iran’s religious and political leadership concerning relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Israel. Azerbaijanis are being urged to oppose these relations and “liberate Islamic land.”

Similar calls have also been circulated by Turkish students belonging to the Alevi religious tradition, as well as leaders of their associations, who study at religious institutions in Qom, Mashhad, Qazvin, and Tehran.

According to some social media and human rights activists, Azerbaijani social media outlets, including Tabriz-based Azeranjuman and Tabrizone, have faced pressure and warnings for not publishing posts about an alleged “hijab ban in the Republic of Azerbaijan.” They have reportedly also been threatened with a review of their operating permits.
