US Weighs Deploying ‘Mother of All Bombs’ in Potential Strikes on Iran – CNN

The US military has drawn up new contingency plans for strikes on Iran, including the possible use of its most powerful conventional bomb against energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities if President Donald Trump orders a resumption of attacks, CNN reported Thursday.

According to the report, which cited several US officials and sources familiar with military planning, the options include the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), widely known as the “mother of all bombs.”

One source told CNN that Trump had requested additional strike plans targeting “a lot of energy infrastructure,” with the MOAB potentially among the weapons considered. Another source said plans for possible attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the underground site known as Pickaxe Mountain, specifically referenced the bomb.

Weighing 21,600 pounds, or approximately 9.8 metric tons, the MOAB is designed to unleash a massive explosion across a broad area rather than penetrate deeply buried structures.

Sources familiar with the planning questioned whether the weapon could destroy Iranian nuclear facilities buried deep beneath protective layers of rock. One source described it as useful for clearing large areas but said it was “definitely not designed as a deep penetration warhead.”

The United States first deployed the MOAB in combat in Afghanistan in 2017, during Trump’s first term, targeting an Islamic State tunnel network.
