Arabian Gulf oil exports exceed prewar levels despite Iranian attacks — WSJ

Oil shipments from the Arabian Gulf have risen above prewar levels as tankers continue transiting the Strait of Hormuz despite security threats and increased shipping costs, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

According to Kpler data cited by the newspaper, total oil flows from the Middle East, including shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and alternative routes, averaged more than 24 million barrels per day in the week ending October 18. This compares with 23.3 million barrels per day before the war.

Oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz, including transfers at sea in the Gulf of Oman, averaged approximately 14 million barrels per day — around 82% of the prewar volume.

The report attributed the recovery in exports to an improvised shipping network operating under US protection, as well as alternative pipeline routes across Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In September, around 40% of non-Iranian crude oil exports from the Persian Gulf were transported through routes bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, up from 17% before the war, the Journal reported.

Despite the increase in shipments, maritime security risks remain elevated. The newspaper's tally, based on maritime security reports, recorded approximately 30 attacks on vessels during October.
