In May of this year, the Embassy of Azerbaijan, in cooperation with the “Azerkhalcha” company, held an exhibition titled “The Grandeur of Azerbaijani Carpets: Learning Through Art” at the city hall of The Hague, Netherlands. Some Persian groups and media criticized the display of Tabriz- and Ardabil-style carpets as part of Azerbaijani carpet heritage.

The Iranian Association of History and Heritage described the presentation of Tabriz and Ardabil carpets as Azerbaijani, which it considered “Baku’s foolish behavior” and a sign of “incompetence and ignorance” by Iranian officials.

The Independent Persian news agency, known as a hub of anti-Turkish extremism, also reacted angrily to the labeling of these carpets as Azerbaijani, claiming that they are not Azerbaijani but rather “masterpieces of Iranian art.”

Notably, carpet and kilim weaving is considered one of the most significant forms of cultural heritage among nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples.
