Tabriz Journalist Asks East Azerbaijan Governor’s Deputy: Will Shahriar Again Be Presented as a “Persian Poet” This Year?

A press conference was held at the East Azerbaijan provincial administration to present this year’s program for commemorating Shahriar, with the participation of Mohammadzadeh, the deputy governor for political affairs.

During the conference, Sama Shirzad, a journalist with Azeran Jameh, questioned the marginalization of Shahriar’s Turkic literary heritage and asked the deputy governor:

“Last year, the organizers of Shahriar’s commemorative events and state television deliberately focused only on his Persian-language poetry. Will you once again present Shahriar as a Persian poet this year?”

The deputy governor for political affairs did not provide a clear answer, avoiding a direct response on how Shahriar would be portrayed in this year’s programs.

Last year’s commemorations of Shahriar were also accompanied by controversy and criticism. In particular, critics objected to the way the poet was presented, arguing that his Turkic heritage and Azerbaijani identity had been pushed into the background.

The organization of last year’s events and the funds allocated for them also drew criticism and discussion in media and cultural circles.

The question now is: Will Shahriar be presented this year in recognition of his full literary, cultural and national identity?
