Lake Urmia currently holds 2.52 billion cubic meters of water, according to Majid Rastgari, head of the West Azerbaijan Regional Water Company.

Rastgari said the lake’s water level stands at 1,270.63 meters, while its surface area covers approximately 1,946 square kilometers.

“Although these figures are higher than those recorded during the same period last year, they do not indicate that Lake Urmia has recovered. The lake remains far from reaching the level required to restore its ecological balance,” Rastgari said.

At its historical ecological optimum, Lake Urmia is estimated to have held about 30–32 billion cubic meters of water and covered about 5,000–6,000 square kilometers.
