Ukraine has become the biggest arms importer in Europe during 2019-2023.
This is stated in the report on international arms transfers published today by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
According to the report, European countries' arms imports increased by 94% in 2019-2023 compared to 2014-2018. At least 30 countries supplied arms to Ukraine as military aid from February 2022, Ukraine was Europe's largest arms importer and the world's fourth largest arms importer in 2019-23.
In 2019-2023, US arms imports to Europe were 55%, which is 15% more than in 2014-2018. Europe’s largest suppliers were Germany and France, accordingly 6,4% and 4.6%.
"Europe is the leader in arms imports, with orders for many expensive weapons, including around 800 fighter jets and attack helicopters," said Pieter Vezeman, senior researcher at SIPRI's Arms Transfer Program.
"In the last two years, we have seen a greater demand for air defense systems in Europe as a result of Russia's missile attack campaign against Ukraine," he added.
