This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson before the ceremony of raising the Swedish flag at the NATO headquarters.

The Secretary General said that NATO has strengthened its presence along its borders in response to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

"When Putin launched a full-scale war of aggression two years ago, he wanted to see less of a NATO presence and more control over his neighbors. He wanted to destroy Ukraine as a sovereign country, but he failed. Today, NATO is bigger and stronger, Ukraine is closer to NATO membership than ever before, and Ukraine continues to bravely fight for its freedom, and we stand by them," Stoltenberg said.

General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg stressed that the alliance's military aid to Ukraine is saving people's lives there and "this aid must continue."

“Russia started this war and Putin can end it today, but Ukraine has no such choice, surrender is not peace. We must continue to strengthen Ukraine and show Putin that he will not get what he wants on the battlefield. He should sit at the table and recognize Ukraine as a sovereign and free country” – NATO Secretary General said.
