Urmu MP protests ban on Turkish names

Urmu Member of Parliament Salman Zakir protested during an open session of parliament against the actions of civil registration and documentation offices that oppose giving Turkish names to children and shops.

The MP reminded the Interior Minister and civil registration officials:

"What is wrong with naming our children and shops using the terms, titles, and names of ethnic groups and languages? Isn’t giving our children simple or complex Turkish names compatible with social norms? Besides, this strengthens Turkish culture, traditions, and the language itself."

According to the “My Child’s Name” campaign, the Civil Registration Organization recently removed dozens of popular Turkish names such as Ayhan, Elhan, Orhan, Əlihan, Əlişan, Elara, Elana, and Elay from the “List of Permitted Names.” Based on the organization’s statistics, these names had previously ranked among the most popular and frequently chosen by parents in past years.

According to the same organization’s data, Ayhan was the most popular in East Azerbaijan Province in 2023 and 2024, and in Zanjan Province in 2023. In West Azerbaijan Province, it was the second most popular name, and the fourth in the province of Erbil.

The Civil Registration Organization has also added numerous Turkish names like Elman, Elşən, Elyar, Eldar, and others to the banned list under the pretext of “having consonant sounds,” refusing to issue birth certificates with these Turkish names. In contrast, names that are not Turkish, such as Maidə, Faizə, and Faiqə, are registered without issue.
