On Tuesday, June 11, the head of the Isfahan Judiciary announced that the hands of “two professional thieves” had been amputated, with the sentences carried out at Isfahan Central Prison.

Iranian media report that Asadollah Jafari, the judiciary chief of Isfahan Province, stated the charges included “participation in hadd and ta’zir thefts as well as crimes such as property damage and intentional injury,” noting that the individuals had “multiple prior convictions.”

He emphasized that the judiciary is determined to deal “decisively” with individuals whose crimes, including various forms of theft, “pose a threat to public safety and security.”

The practice of hand or finger amputation as punishment has repeatedly made headlines in Iran in recent years. Despite widespread criticism, Iran’s judiciary continues to issue and enforce such corporal sentences in its prisons.

Diana Eltahawy, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa division, previously described such acts as “a grotesque and shameful display of brutality by Iranian authorities against human rights and human dignity.”

She stressed that “amputation is judicially sanctioned torture and therefore an international crime. Those ordering or carrying out such punishments must be fairly prosecuted.”
