A criminal investigation has been launched against Yashar Soltani

The Iranian judiciary has announced the opening of a criminal case against journalist Yashar Soltani, who exposed some of the government's corruption, for his investigation into the disappearance of 61 tons of gold from the Central Bank. At the same time, the Central Bank of Iran has said it will file a complaint against the journalist, without clarifying the issues raised by Mr. Soltani.

Yashar Soltani, an Azerbaijani journalist, is known as the whistleblower in the so-called "Tehran Municipality Real Estate" case involving Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf's administration, and he has previously published several stories about corruption in Iran.

Yashar Sultani shared a report on Sunday titled “The disappearance of 61 tons of Central Bank gold in one year / The mysterious fate of imported gold!” According to him, Iranian customs data shows that approximately 81,591 kilograms of gold entered Iran in the first 10 months of 2024. According to the law, this gold should be sold in various forms on the Iranian market and made available to users. However, only 15,805 kilograms of this entered the market in total. “In fact, there is no news about the entry of 61,500 kilograms of gold into the country, and we do not know where and which organization or institution this gold is in,” Soltani noted.

The Central Bank, however, has not commented on the matter and has said it will file a complaint against Mr. Soltani. "Mizan News Agency" claimed that after Mr. Soltani appeared before the Culture and Media Court, the court requested documents and evidence from him, and that he “did not provide any evidence or documents showing the loss of 61 tons of gold from the Central Bank, and therefore a criminal case was opened against him.”

Yashar Soltani, however, denied the news agency’s claims on his social media account. He said that after being summoned to court, he presented all documents based on the Central Bank’s website, the Iranian Customs website, and reports from the country’s currency system to the deputy prosecutor.
