According to The Wall Street Journal, Iran has ordered thousands of tons of ammonium perchlorate from China, expected to arrive soon. The chemical can be used in the production of fuel for hundreds of ballistic missiles. This comes amid reports that the deadly April explosion at Bandar Rajaei was caused by improper storage of missile fuel components.

According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, the Iranian company Pishgaman Tejarat Rafie Novin placed the order for ammonium perchlorate several months ago with Lion Commodities Holding, a firm based in Hong Kong. The shipment is expected to reach Iran within the next few months.

Ammonium perchlorate is a highly potent oxidizer and a key ingredient in solid rocket fuel. It is typically produced by ion exchange of sodium perchlorate with ammonium chloride.

The New York Times, citing a source linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that the explosive material in the deadly April 26 (Ordibehesht 6) blast at Bandar Rajaei was sodium perchlorate, which resulted in dozens of deaths.

George Herbert, a professor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies who specializes in missile defense, told The Washington Post that “extremely bright flames transitioning from white to yellow and the appearance of red smoke could indicate the presence of sodium perchlorate. However, ammonium perchlorate is also possible.”

According to The Wall Street Journal citing informed sources, Iran is likely to allocate part of the recently purchased ammonium perchlorate to its proxy militias, including the Houthis in Yemen.

The report notes that amid intensified Israeli attacks that have weakened Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen, the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking to rebuild and reinforce its proxy network known as the “Axis of Resistance.”
