Israel launches major strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites

On June 13, Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” a large-scale military campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories, and top military commanders, aiming to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon. The operation began with airstrikes and covert sabotage missions, including attacks on the Natanz uranium enrichment site and locations in Tehran.

Iranian media reported multiple explosions and confirmed that Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami and two prominent nuclear scientists had been killed. Civilian casualties were also reported, including children killed in a residential area. In response, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei condemned Israel’s actions as a crime and vowed retaliation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the moment as “decisive” for Israel’s survival, saying the operation would continue “for as many days as it takes.” Defense Minister Israel Katz warned of imminent missile and drone retaliation from Iran. Israel declared a state of emergency, closed Ben Gurion Airport, and placed its air defense on high alert. Tens of thousands of soldiers were mobilized.

While a senior Israeli official claimed coordination with the U.S., U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any American involvement, stating Washington’s top priority was protecting U.S. personnel. However, Iran’s armed forces accused both Israel and the U.S. of orchestrating the attack and warned they would pay a “heavy price.”

The strikes come just days before a planned sixth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Oman, which now appear increasingly unlikely to succeed. Despite intelligence assessments that Iran is not currently building a nuclear bomb, U.S. officials had reportedly anticipated an Israeli strike.

The escalation triggered market panic — oil prices spiked, global stock markets dropped, and investors rushed to safe-haven assets. Meanwhile, the U.S. military began contingency planning for potential evacuations of American civilians in the region.
