Zanjan’s Sarjin Baft Textile Factory Suspends Operations Entirely

Following protests by workers on the evening shift over unpaid wages, management of the Sarjin Baft textile factory in Zanjan has completely shut down the facility.

The unexpected decision has left around 350 workers in a state of uncertainty.

One Sarjin Baft worker told the ILNA news agency:

“The employer kept making promises and conditioned the payment of wages on production levels. For example, they said that if we produced 30 to 35 tons per week, the overdue wages would be paid. The workers did their utmost and even increased production to 40 tons so that the factory would be profitable and our wages could be paid. This production unit handles everything from cotton processing to finished clothing. Yet despite this level of production, they suddenly halted and shut down the entire factory.”

The labor activist also criticized the cancellation of a planned visit by senior judicial officials of the province:

“Provincial judicial officials were supposed to visit the factory yesterday to inspect the situation. Around 350 workers had gathered outside the company from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. so they could personally explain how heavy our workload is and how the employer is playing with our livelihoods.”

According to him, judicial authorities were given false information regarding the workers’ protest:

“Unfortunately, they were told that there was unrest at the factory. As a result, they canceled the visit and instead held a meeting inside a government office without the workers present. We were not allowed to attend.”

The worker concluded by describing the difficult living conditions faced by his colleagues:

“Ninety percent of the workers are married, heads of households, and tenants. Under these economic conditions, how are they supposed to feed their children after going three months without pay? The factory is completely closed, and we are waiting for the authorities to take urgent action.”
