18 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (read: IRGC terrorist organization) were killed as a result of Israel's strikes on Iranian positions in Syria starting from December.

However, during this period, Iran has not directly attacked Israel's positions, instead, it prefers to fight against Israel by increasing its support for proxy forces in the region.

A fatal strike to its consulate in Damascus could force Iran to take direct action, experts say. Iranian officials, as always, have vowed to avenge. Although Tehran's threats are generally empty, analysts believe that the Iranian regime has no choice but to respond this time.

Raz Zimmt, an analyst at the Israel-based Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), said that the building that was hit was used by the Quds Force, a wing of the IRGC, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States.

He claimed that the attack was part of Israel's plan to "strain relations with Iran by striking a lethal blow and leaving Iran with no other option but to retaliate."

The Iranian-backed "Axis of Resistance" has been targeting Israel, even trying to impose a naval blockade using Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Israel has responded by hitting proxy groups that make up the Axis of resistance,"  but has increased its attacks on IRGC positions, especially since December.

Israel's attack on the Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria means the message "Continued support for the Axis of Resistance may have more severe consequences."
