At the same time that punitive measures for the implementation of mandatory hijab rules have increased, as have protests against them, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has stated that it is an important Islamic instruction.
He said this during his speech on May 9.
"The importance of hijab is dictated by Islam and Sharia, and we are obligated to follow Islamic opinion," the president stated.
Iranian social media activists and human rights defenders believe Ebrahim Raisi's speech will lead to increased pressure on women and girls.
They claim that the president is attempting to impose medieval rules disguised as religion in order to gain power.
It should be noted that since April 13, mandatory hijab rules have been strengthened in the majority of Iran's cities.
This sparked clashes between citizens and government officials, as well as dozens of arrests.
The tightening of the rules coincides with Ali Khamenei's earlier call for the implementation of mandatory hijab rules. "We have never compromised on the issue of the hijab; it is one of our fundamental principles," Khamenei stated.
