Giving Turkish names to children has become more common in Ardabil

In Ardabil province of southern Azerbaijan, Iran, the cases of giving Turkish names to newborn children have increased.

Vahid Khulusi, head of the Registration Department of Ardabil province, informed about this.

According to him, the boys' names have recently been changed from Ali, Muhammad, and Amir to Ayhan, Arkan, and Alisan.

"Before that, babies in Aradbil were named after religious figures and saints, but now these strange names are common, which is very surprising," said Khulusi.

He pointed out that a similar trend is occurring among girls. The head of the Registry Office stated that while Fatima, Zahra, Maryam, and other Islamic names were previously used for girls, they have since been replaced by Mahlin, Nisan, and other similar names.

Although Vahid Khulusi was not pleased with the increase in cases of children being given Turkish names, he claimed that the department he led was forced to register those names.

Contrary to Khulusi's claims, registering Turkish names has become extremely difficult.

The head of Ardabil province's Registration Office and his employees in other regions refuse to issue identity documents, claiming that Turkish names are non-Iranian and non-Islamic.

Parents must fight for months, if not years, and apply to the courts to obtain a document bearing this name for a child given a Turkish name.
