The head of Tehran Traffic Police has declared it a crime for women to ride motorcycles

The head of Tehran's traffic police announced that, since it is currently impossible to obtain a driver's license, women riding motorcycles is "considered a crime" and the police will deal with it.

Mousavipour stressed that the traffic police are not the ones who decide whether to issue women motorcycle licenses, but that the police’s mission is “to enforce the rules and maintain road discipline.”

As the backlash against women riding motorcycles in Iran has grown, Mohammad Siraj, a member of the parliament’s social affairs commission, said on September 15 that women are working as bus, trailer and bulldozer drivers:

“These people have their licenses, they are working, and there are no problems. However, it should be said that this issue with motorcycles has its own cultural and social consequences,” he said.

Mohammad Siraj said there are religious and traditional concerns about women’s clothing and behavior while riding motorcycles.

A woman riding a motorcycle cannot keep her clothes on because both her hands are involved in steering the motorcycle and her clothes are exposed to the wind.

It should be noted that despite the Islamic Republic's oppression of women in Iran, reports and videos show women riding motorcycles on the streets without the mandatory hijab.
