Zarif wrote in a post on the social media platform X that he will continue to perform his duties as vice president for strategic affairs following Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's "prudent" follow-ups and consultations, as well as his written directive.

Zarif stated that the first meeting between Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Pezeshkian's administration earlier in the day, which featured the highest number of female, ethnic, and religious representatives, demonstrated Pezeshkian's "honesty and courage" in keeping his election campaign promises.

He expressed his pride in the fact that he and his colleagues' proposals, which were presented through a "transparent and cooperative" process, resulted in the appointment of nearly 70% of the ministers and vice presidents, as well as numerous ministers' deputies.

Ten days after taking office, on August 11, Zarif announced his resignation from his positions as head of the Center for Strategic Studies and vice president for strategic affairs for Iran.

Zarif expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcome of his work as head of the steering council responsible for choosing the cabinet members of the incoming Iranian administration through a post on X.

Zarif, 64, served as Iran's foreign minister from 2013 to 2021 under former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
