The Iranian parliament opposes teaching non-Persian languages.

The draft law on teaching non-Persian literature in Iranian schools, prepared by the Iranian parliament's Education Commission, was voted on today in an open session of parliament.

Iranian media reported this.

The vote was attended by 246 MPs, with 104 voting in favor of the bill, 130 voting against it, 5 abstaining, and 7 not voting at all.

As a result, the bill that would have allowed non-Persian languages and literature to be taught in Iranian schools was rejected.

It should be noted that one of the main promises made by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his pre-election campaign was to implement Article 15 and eliminate discrimination against non-Persian languages.

Alireza Munadi, the chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Education Commission and a Tabriz MP, stated in December 2021 that the issue of teaching non-Persian literature was being considered, but this was soon forgotten, and the MP refused to answer questions about it.

It should be noted that although Article 15 of the Iranian constitution does not provide for the teaching of non-Persian languages, but only for the teaching of the literature of non-Persian peoples, this has not been implemented for 45 years.

After today's decision by the parliament, it is believed that the project will not be on the agenda until the next presidential elections, and is intended to be used as a backup propaganda tool to increase voter turnout in the 2028 elections.
