Iran-linked group tried in Azerbaijan for plotting terror attacks, attempting to establish “Karimeh State”

A court in Baku has concluded the trial of members of the so-called “Gisas Group” (Group of Retribution), who were accused of planning terrorist acts and attempting to establish a separatist entity known as the “Karimeh State,” allegedly with ties to Iran.

According to APA News Agency, the verdict was delivered at the Baku Court for Serious Crimes under the chairmanship of Judge Nouruz Karimov. The court sentenced thirteen individuals to lengthy prison terms ranging from 10 to 17 years.

Faiq Zeynalov and Ilham Sheikhaliyev were each sentenced to 17 years in prison. Huseyn Huseynzada, Ehtibar Mohammadzada, Ilkin Baghirov, Vugar Mammadov, and Elgun Aghayev received 16-year sentences. Elvin Jafarov, Yusif Mirzayev, Ruslan Aliyev, Savalan Huseynli, and Mehrali Musayev were each sentenced to 15 years and 6 months. Mir Vasi Aliyev was sentenced to 10 years.

The defendants were found guilty of plotting terrorist operations within Azerbaijan and allegedly aiming to create a parallel state structure inspired or supported by external forces. Azerbaijani authorities have previously accused Iran of fostering networks within the country to destabilize national security and incite religious extremism.
