US Defense Department details 'Operation Midnight Hammer' - 25 minutes was enough

General Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provided a full briefing on Sunday afternoon about "Operation Midnight Hammer," which they said destroyed three major Iranian nuclear facilities using stealth aircraft and bunker-buster bombs — all within 25 minutes.

General Caine explained that more aircraft took off from Missouri than ultimately participated in the strike, with many diverted westward as decoys. He added that seven B-2 bombers flew an 18-hour mission toward Iran, supported by mid-air refueling. Fighter jets joined from another direction, and the U.S. employed cyberattacks, preemptive fire from fourth- and fifth-generation fighters, and 24 Tomahawk missiles launched from a submarine to distract Iranian defenses, allowing the B-2s to reach Fordow and Natanz nuclear facilities undetected.

In total, 75 precision-guided weapons were used. Dozens of Tomahawk missiles struck targets in central Iran, including the Isfahan nuclear facility. At 1:45 a.m. Tehran time, the B-2s dropped two 30,000-pound MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) bombs on Fordow. Fourteen more were dropped on Natanz and Fordow later.

Final damage assessments are still underway, with full reports expected by Sunday or Monday. Gen. Caine emphasized the operation’s secrecy, saying many in Washington had no prior knowledge. Over 125 aircraft, including decoys, refuelers, reconnaissance, and fighters, participated — but 25 minutes was enough to strike all key nuclear targets.

Defense Secretary Hegseth stressed that no Iranian civilians or military personnel were targeted, only nuclear sites. All weapons reportedly hit their intended marks. He reiterated that the U.S. is not seeking regime change, and would have preferred a new agreement, but Trump concluded that negotiations had failed and Iran had no intention of halting its nuclear ambitions.

Hegseth warned Iran that any attack on U.S. forces in the region would provoke a far stronger response, but hinted that if Iran refrains, this phase of U.S. military action may be over, asserting that Iran’s nuclear aspirations have been eliminated.
