The Balochistan Human Rights Documentation Network reported that several schools in the city of Kangan, located in the province, have refused to enroll children from Sunni families.

According to the report, school officials told parents that the refusal was due to the children not belonging to the Shia branch of Islam.

Commenting on the issue, Kangan Education Department Director Nasrollah Bohrani described the schools' actions as "mismanagement" but did not state clearly whether the matter would be resolved.

According to official statistics, Sunnis make up between 8 and 10 percent of Iran's population. Sunni religious leaders, however, estimate that the figure is between 15 and 20 percent.

There are currently no Sunni representatives in Iran's leadership, the Cabinet, or other senior government positions.
