Pakistan does not require US approval to construct a gas pipeline with Iran

A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry stated that Islamabad will not wait for the US to lift its sanctions or for approval to construct a pipeline so that it can import natural gas from Iran.

This was stated by Mumtaz Zahra Baloch in a Voice of America interview.

Donald Lu, the United States' assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, reportedly stated on March 19 that the United States maintains control over the construction of the proposed pipeline between Iran and Pakistan.

Lu also mentioned that Islamabad has not asked for the lifting of sanctions in order to resume gas trade with Iran.

In response to these claims, Zahra Baloch, a spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, said: "In our view, there is no room for dispute on the drawing of the line, and there is no need for the third party to turn a blind eye to it."

It should be mentioned that talks to build a gas pipeline between Tehran and Islamabad were initiated in 1995.

However, Pakistan postponed the project's implementation because it believed sanctions would be imposed.
