Women human rights defenders faced 60 years of prison

Eleven female activists were given a total sentence of 60 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Gilan province's third division.

This was stated by their attorney, Mustafa Nili.

The activists were accused of “provocation against the government”, “creating and being members of an illegal group”, “assembly and collusion against national security.”

On August 16 and 17, 2023, the activists were taken into custody by security personnel.

Human Rights Watch, along with 228 French politicians and human rights defenders, issued a statement condemning the arrests of female activists.
