Turkish cyclist Mustafa Ayvurkan, who was injured during the fifth and final stage of the 37th edition of the Azerbaijan International Cycling Tour, has died at Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz.
The fatal stage, held on the route from Sarein to Tabriz, saw a collision among riders of the Turkish Spor Toto team. As a result, the 21-year-old cyclist sustained severe head and neck injuries. He was first taken to Sarab Hospital and later transferred to Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz, where he succumbed to a traumatic brain injury despite medical efforts.
Turkiye’s Minister of Youth and Sports extended condolences following Ayvurkan’s passing during the tour.
